Volvo’s Jan Ivarsson Awarded for His Safety Work

Every two years, when the International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles takes place, the NHTSA decides the winner of the "most prestigious award in traffic safety", as they call it. This year, at the 21st edition, Volvo’s Jan Ivarsson was awarded the prize, as his work on car safety features was highly appreciated by the NHTSA.

Ivarsson is currently responsible for strategy and requirement specifications at the car safety department for Volvo.

"I was happy and at the same time surprised when I was notified by the NHTSA that I would be receiving the award. It was a wonderful surprise,"
says Jan Ivarsson, one of the ten Volvo employees that received the award over the years.

"This is naturally an immense honour for me, but above all invaluable verification that Volvo is now reinforcing its leading position in car safety," he added.

Last year, Volvo was announcing their aim to design cars that should not crash, so by the end of 2020, no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car.

The most recent milestone in Volvo’s safety features is the Collision Warning with full auto-brake and pedestrian detection system offered on several models.

"Just a few years ago, we felt that the competition was beginning to catch up with us in the sphere of safety. Many of our competitors have been investing immense resources in new technology and they were closing in with a number of fresh innovations in the area of active safety. However, over the past few years we have demonstrated the sheer extent of the expertise in our company. Our new passive and active safety systems which are now being rolled out to customers are of absolute world class," emphasizes Jan Ivarsson.
