Volvo made us wait more than a decade for the second generation of the Volvo XC90, but the Swedish automaker isn’t going to make us wait very long for special-edition models. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about the recently rendered XC90 Polestar, but the all-new SUV will likely be getting a sportier look pretty soon courtesy of the XC90 R-Design.
During a presentation of the 2015 Volvo XC90 in Sweden, a forum member at Swede Speed snapped a quick picture as Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath revealed an image showing the new R-Design model. As its name suggests, the R-Design is basically an appearance package, and this picture definitely shows off a distinctive look for the new XC90, but we’ll hold our judgment until we see a real image of the model to determine whether or not to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Up front, the new fascia has enlarged intakes and a painted lower lip spoiler, and it looks like Volvo might have some blacked-out headlights in store as well. In the side view, we see a stylish set of split five-spoke wheels to go along with bright silver mirror caps and wider side sills. Overall, this depiction of the XC90 R-Design features the signature monochromatic red paint scheme with a drastic reduction of shiny chrome from the standard XC90.

As we’ve seen from the recent S60, V60 and XC60 R-Design offerings, it is also very likely that the interior will get some kind of upgrade include sport bucket front seats, but it’s not clear if the XC90 would get any sort of unique suspension tuning. While there definitely won’t be any engine tuning upgrades, the good news is that both versions of the new XC90 should be plenty entertaining in their own right with the 316-hp T6 and the 400-hp T8 plug-in hybrid.

Aside from the image confirming that Volvo is working on the new model, there is no indication as to whether the R-Design package will be available when the XC90 launches early next year. With the Paris Motor Show right around the corner, there’s a good chance we could see the XC90 R-Design model there.
