The 2016 Detroit Auto Show was the place where this year’s North American Car of The Year and Truck of The Year winners were announced.
Honda Civic and Volvo XC90 are the big winners of the NACOTY Awards this year. The two models were awarded their distinctions by a group made up of 53 international automotive journalists from Canada and the United States of America. The awards are given based on factors including design, innovation, safety performance, handling, driver satisfaction, and value.
The 2016 Honda Civic won this year’s North American Car of the Year Award, and Honda prides itself on the fact that the nameplate won this prestigious award for the second time in history. The last time the Honda Civic received this accolade was in 2006, when it shared the stage with the Honda Ridgeline. Back then, Honda’s Ridgeline truck won the 2006 North American Truck of the Year award.
Honda has developed all-new Civics in North America, the same place where the car is built for this market. According to Honda officials, this fact makes receiving this award “even sweeter” for them. Over time, 11 Honda models have been named finalists for North American Car of The Year awards, making this brand more successful than any other outside of the Detroit Big Three, as the company notes in its related press release.
The other big winner at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show is the Volvo XC90, who was granted the North American Truck of the Year distinction. Just like the Honda Civic, the Volvo nameplate won this award before, back in 2003.
Volvo’s employees are “absolutely thrilled that the XC90 has won this prestigious and most respected award,” said the brand’s President and CEO, Lex Kerssemakers. The Volvo official also promised to deliver an entirely renewed product line by the year 2019, when the current XC90 will be the oldest car in their portfolio.
