Volvo XC60 Tops Collision Avoidance Systems Study

According to a report made by the Highway Loss Data Institute, the Volvo XC60 has a low accident rate made possible by its avoidance systems that are improving safety. The XC60 was involved in 27 percent fewer accidents than other mid-sized luxury SUVs, though Volvo drivers might also be more safety-oriented. The Swidish carmaker’s low-speed collision avoidance system also played an important part in achieving those figures.

Also worth mentioning is that the XC60 was involved in 51 percent injury accidents. The Highway Loss Data Institute points out that Volvo’s SUV was involved in 19 percent less property damage accidents than other cars made by the same company. The XC60’s City Safety system uses an infrared laser sensor to spot possible accidents at speeds ranging from 2 to 19 mph (3 to 31 km/h). If the driver doesn’t reacts in time, the system automatically activates the brakes.The maximum speed at which the system is effective is 19mph (31 km/h). According to data provided by the test collision avoidance systems can significantly help distracted drivers who fail to foresee an accident.

“Driver mistakes are responsible for 90 percent of crashes.This is the first technology that can reach out to the driver at the moment of danger and bring his mind back to the danger.” Institute President Adrian Lund was quoted as saying by autonews.com.

The Highway Loss Data Institute will commence a second study this year regarding the effectiveness of collision avoidance systems designed for higher traveling speeds. We’d also mention that there has been no other comparable data made public about the technology.
