No fewer than six years ago, the XC Coupe Concept set the trend for the 40.1 and 40.2 concepts that previewed the XC40 and Polestar 2. The question is, can you combine the design of those two to create a compact coupe-crossover thingy that Volvo may actually put into production?
U.S. dealers told Automotive News that a coupe-style crossover is coming, alright! The March 2020 report says the newcomer would bear the name C40 as a nod to previous two-/three-door models such as the C30 and C70.

Rumored to be revealed in 2021 “as part of a fleet of Volvo EVs now in the pipeline,” the C40 could very well look like the XC40 Coupe renderings from Brazilian pixel manipulator Kleber Silva.

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, everything from the Volvo logo on the front grille to the B pillars is XC40 while the rear end is heavily inspired by the Concept 40.2 fastback sedan. Rendered with two exhaust pipes and chrome finishers instead of an all-electric powertrain, the design proposition appears to offer as much headroom in the front as it does in the rear. And that’s extremely important in a coupe SUV, don’t you agree?

Slotting between the BMW X2 and BMW X4 in terms of length, the C40 would share the Common Module Architecture with the XC40. That’s a front- and all-wheel-drive platform that’s also available with plug-in hybrid and electric options (as in the T5 Twin Engine and Recharge P8).

The latter is the most exciting of the lot because it shares the dual-motor layout and battery pack with the Polestar 2. Capable of more than 400 kilometers (approximately 250 miles) on a single charge, the XC40 Recharge P8 also boasts 408 PS or 402 horsepower and instant torque.

Further still, Volvo plans to redesign the XC90 on the Scalable Product Architecture II in 2022. After it, a flagship SUV in the guise of the XC100 is said to enter production in 2023 while the electric option is expected in 2024 as per the dealers who talked to Automotive News.
