Having refreshed nearly its entire vehicle lineup for 2013 and already started working on the new Scalable Platform Architecture, Swedish automaker Volvo is reportedly developing yet another platform that will underpin a couple of new models.
According to Automobile, Volvo and Geely are looking to develop a modular Golf-sized vehicle platform which will “carry” both sedan and hatchback versions. While information is still scarce, our source claims the Golf-style five-door hatchback will rival BMW’s incoming 1 Series sedan and Audi’s new A3 sedan.
Besides the sedan, which is supposed to be a “more spacious replacement for the compact S40”, Volvo is also planning a C60 coupe by 2016. The new 2+2 vehicle will be styled around “a set of cleverly composed P1800 genes”. Sounds more than thrilling, but this is where all the information stops for the time being.
Getting back to the SPA platform, it looks like the Chinese-owned company is working on a new XC40 and a S90 flagship model. As expected, Volvo’s new vehicles will be powered by three and four-cylinder engines, as all the five and six-cylinder units will be axed by 2016.
