Volvo is passively switching focus to its gasoline engines, which the T5 which has become available in Britain on the larger S90 sedan, V90 wagon (Cross Country included) and XC90 SUV.
But is that really what you want, a Volvo with a gasoline engine that's not even a hybrid? Well, it might not be a matter of choice because of the crackdown on diesel. Let's run down each individual model that gets the T5 and see what options you have.
One thing they all have in common is an output of 250 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) delivered through an 8-speed automatic. Even though that sounds like a hot hatch engine, modern Volvos all have light steering and no engine sound, so you're not getting a driver's car.
The S90 T5 is said to reach 62 mph (100 kph) in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 140 mph (225 kph). With an estimated combined fuel economy of 42.8 mpg, it's not too bad.
You can't get the T5 in the base Momentum trim, but a T5 R-Design starts at a reasonable £41,120, slotting between the £38,120 T5 with 190 HP and the 235 HP D5 diesel costing £44,570.
As for the V90 T5, this takes 7 seconds to reach 62 mph but has the exact same fuel consumption. It's priced from £43,120, also available in R-Design and up models. The Cross Country version is slower and more thirsty (7.9 seconds and 35.8 mpg), but that's down to the standard AWD system which also explains the £44,685.
The XC90 T5 AWD with Momentum trim kicks off the range at £50,435. However, you can go as high as £59,235 for the XC90 T5 Inscription Pro.
“The T5 petrol engine is a superb addition to the S90, V90 and XC90 ranges,” said Volvo’s UK managing director Jon Wakefield. “This cutting-edge engine brings increased choice for our customers, and offers strong performance with excellent efficiency and refinement. We’re sure it’ll be a hit with retail and business users alike.”
