Volvo has launched three brand new cars since 2014, the XC90, S90 and V90. Today, the 90 series is complete, as the V90 Cross Country made its official debut.
It's been eagerly anticipated by many hardcore Volvo fans who wanted the qualities of a Cross Country in flagship configuration.
It's been almost 20 years since the first Cross Country model was introduced. Just like Audi's allroad, the brand is synonymous with the rugged all-road, all-weather capabilities. In a way, the V90 CC is the best representation of modern Sweden.
It's a country where every highway leads to a lake or a forest. Sweden is also very sparsely populated, which is why all 90 series models have comfort. Composure comes from the fact that at any moment, you could find some ice or discover a wild animal in the middle of the road.
We're kind of ignoring the V90 because it's a car that sells itself. Just look at how popular the XC70 has been and you realize that in Germany, this could be the best-selling Volvo for the next year.
“Designing a Volvo Cross Country is not a styling exercise, a plastic job. It is based on honest capability. The Volvo V90 Cross Country brings a surprising and intriguing combination of a strong, powerful exterior and a luxurious, Scandinavian interior. It will continue the genuine tradition of the Volvo Cross Country with a new recipe: the blend of powerful off-road capability in a most elegant, sophisticated, tailored wagon suit,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars.
That plastic he's talking about covers the entire lower part of the car. It's also got silver skid plates at the front and the rear, plus the usual off-road suspension system.
They didn't give us a single detail about the engine, but that's because they didn't have to. The Cross Country is going to offer the same 2.0-liter turbocharged motors as the regular V90. Depending on the market, you're either going to opt for the D5 or the T6, but it's always going to be linked to an 8-speed automatic and AWD.
