Back in 2002, the world was amazed at how a small car like the then-new Renault Megane was able to score the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP. Since then, most cars in the segment have started receiving the coveted maximum rating, yet none really went as far as the all-new Volvo V40.
It managed to score a much better overall result than any of its rivals, thanks in no small part to its clever pedestrian airbag system which granted it an excellent rating of 88% - the highest score ever achieved in the category. Adult and child protection were also rated as top-notch. This is proof that Volvo is committed to their bold safety claims and their plan to completely eliminate injuries and deaths in their cars altogether by 2020 - we say they are well on their way to achieving that, but still a long way off.

Watch the V40 get crashed into and notice just how stiff the whole bodyshell really is - factor in the multitude of airbags and other safety systems and the Volvo hatchback looks like a very safe buy, if not the safest.
