Following a couple of years of speculation, the peeps from Volvo Cars came clean about their manufacturing intentions in the US. In essence, the Swedish manufacturer will invest approximately $500 million in a state-of-the-art car-making facility.
Underlining the brand’s commitment to the North American market, the newly announced factory is exactly what Volvo needs these days. After it introduced the second-gen XC90 to much acclaim, the next logical step is to expand production capacity.
After all, it’s been confirmed that the S80-replacing S90 is slated to arrive in the first quarter of 2016. The upcoming model will be underpinned by an XC90-derived SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) chassis and production is confirmed to commence at the manufacturer’s plant in Daqing, China. In any case, the S90 is only the shape of things to come.
Volvo’s CMA compact car plans include an all-new V40 slated for 2016 and an XC40 crossover SUV in 2018, so go figure why the US plant is vital for the Swedish automaker’s future. Unfortunately for the curious among us, “the company has drawn up a short list of potential locations and full details of the location of the new factory and the size of the investment will be announced at a later date.”
Including the Torslanda plant in Sweden, the Volvo Cars Corporation operates two more factories in China and a facility in Belgium at the present moment. With the upcoming Stateside plant, the near future will see Volvo Cars operating no less than five plants on three continents.
“The US is an absolutely crucial part of our global transformation and today’s announcement makes it perfectly clear that Volvo is in the US to stay.” declared Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars.
