Volvo Unveils Concept Coupe - The Next-Generation P1800

Now picture this: 85-year-old Roger Moore driving the brand new Volvo Concept Coupe in a follow up of “The Saint” series. Disturbing? Of course it is, but not more disturbing than Volvo saying the Concept Coupe is the next-generation P1800. Yes, we’re a bit tired of automakers trying to revive their iconic nameplates (see the Ghibli rant), even though the concepts in question sport inspired design cues.

And Volvo’s Concept Coupe, which was created to showcase the company’s new scalable architecture, is no exception. With its low bonnet, roof, “floating” front grille and T-shaped DRL headlights, the Concept Coupe carries a fresh look but still sports “more than 85 years of Volvo heritage”. The automaker claims the new concept car features elements that echo the design of the P1800 from the 1960. However, Volvo says those elements are only “subtle links to a glorious past” and, to be honest, we’re finding them very difficult to spot.

Intriguing details are found in the cabin as well, with the Concept Coupe being fitted with a handcrafted crystal gearshift lever. Premium leather upholstery, wood trims and black accents are also present, along with a head-up display and a large portrait touchscreen (as opposed to landscape screen available in common cars).

The new study is motivated by a hybrid powertrain which consists of a Drive-E 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a turbocharger and turbo and an electric motor on the rear axle. Total output is rated at 400 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque.

"The Volvo Concept Coupé is no futuristic dream car. It is designed to demonstrate the capability of our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures. Even though the all-new XC90 is an entirely different type of car, you will recognise the connection instantly when it is revealed next year," said Volvo designer Thomas Ingenlath.
