Volvo Trucks Sales Jump 74% in May

Thanks in part to the widespread success of the FM and FH series, Volvo Trucks managed to increase its sales figures by 74 % in May compared with the year-earlier period. The charge was lead by Europe, where demand jumped by 112 % and North America, where Volvo sold 132 % more trucks.

In total, deliveries in Europe amounted to 4,391 trucks in May, representing a 92% year-on-year increase for the Western part of the continent alone. In addition, the individual French and German markets continued to show strong trends. In France, where the Volvo FMX construction truck was launched in 2010 and was very well received, the number of deliveries rose 77% in May.

At the same time, deliveries in the German market rose 72%. In Russia, Volvo Trucks’ deliveries jumped by a staggering 436% in compared with the corresponding period in 2010. As a whole, deliveries in Eastern Europe rose 198% in May.

The automaker’s truck division continued to capture market shares in South America and deliveries in May amounted to 2,118 vehicles, a 53% year-on-year increase. In Brazil, Volvo Trucks continues to strengthen its position in the medium-heavy segment through increased deliveries of Volvo VM, which is appreciated for its low fuel consumption.

Meanwhile, demand in South Africa was strong in May, amounting to 142 trucks, up 149% compared with the year-earlier period. In North America, truck deliveries in May amounted to 2,093, up 117% compared with May 2010. In the long-haul segment, demand continued to increase as older trucks are replaced by new ones, and also because of favourable conditions in the freight industry in general. At the same time, customer interests continued to increase for Volvo trucks equipped with new energy-efficient engines that meet EPA10 emission legislation requirements.
