Volvo to Launch S100 Flagship Sedan

Back in April, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson denied rumors that hinted towards a Swedish flagship sedan to rival the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class or Audi A8, and we honestly thought it was all over, with the S80 set to remain the company’s range-topping vehicle.

But it looks like Volvo’s Chinese owners have something else on their minds and want to develop a brand new flagship car, called S100. According to Geely chairman Li Shufu, the S100 will be developed on a stretched version of the platform that will underpin the next-gen S80, with production scheduled to begin at Volvo’s factory in Chengdu.

However, Shufu had nothing to say about the engines that will power the future S100, a vehicle that will compete against V8 and V12-powered cars. Volvo has already announced plans to drop just about anything that’s not a four-cylinder, and this is where they may have a problem. Will a four-potter flagship sell? Will it offer enough power? Two questions that won’t be answered very soon...
