True to its status of one of Volvo Buses’ most important clients, Singapore transportation operator SBS Transit announced it has ordered no less than 300 double-deck buses, worth some $110 million. The buses will be deployed starting next year and well into 2012.
The transit company ordered buses built on the Volvo B9TL chassis (the chassis will be produced in Sweden) and will wear Wrightbus bodies (the bodies will be mounted onto the chassis in Singapore). All of the 300 buses will be equipped with Euro 5 compliant engines and, as a premiere, will be fitted with the ITS4mobility fleet management system.
ITS4mobility will allow SBS to monitor the buses from the operational efficiency stand point, but also have an idea on how the driver operates the bus. This in turn might translate into better fuel consumption and lower running costs.
“We have been renewing our fleet over the last five years to provide our commuters with a more comfortable and safer ride,” said SBS Transit's CEO Gan Juay Kiat. “The new buses are also environmentally friendly, which is a key consideration for us.”
This is the second large order coming from Singapore, after SBS asked last year for 150 double-deck buses in 2009.
