If BMW made the Volvo S90 and V90, both models would come out with the biggest engines first, 3-liter or even 4-liter ones. However, the Swedish car company says they are simply not frugal enough for the modern age, so the biggest you can get is a 2-liter. Take it or leave it!
A huge launch event for these flagship models has been organized this week, and from there, we have the first acceleration videos tests.
We found reviews of both the D5 and the T6 on one channel, which is quite lucky. They are similar engines to the ones featured on the award-winning XC90, with one notable exception. To get rid of some of the turbo lag, Volvo has devised a kind of compressed air system for the D5, which pushes air into the engine even before the turbo starts working.
Apart from that, the D5 is just like your average premium 2-liter engine. It produces 235 PS, so it can also be compared to the Audi 3.0 TDI making 218 PS and the twin-turbo BMW engine with a similar output.
While the acceleration is not magical, the digital dash of the car partially makes up for this. As for the T6, it's got a supercharger and a turbocharger, pushing the output to 320 PS. With this unit, the S90 sedan is supposed to reach 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds while the diesel requires a leisurely 7.3 seconds.
Comparing the V90 and S90 to anything else borders on impossible. The interior is a bold statement, while the exterior is nothing like the older cars. Volvo estates used to be all about going to the used furniture store and taking an antique armchair home. However, the newer models are less practical. For instance, the trunk of the estate can be compared to that of far smaller cars, such as the Honda Civic Tourer.
But that car doesn't have the backing of a legendary football player like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, right?
