Volvo is finally launching its new flagship sedan in the US. The S90 is a sister car to the XC90 and should do quite well, but we can't help feeling that it's a little too expensive.
Considering that gas is less than $2 per gallon right now, it's not the perfect time to be green. Yet Volvo wants to stay one step away of tightening emission regulations, which is why the S90 will only be available with 2.0-liter engines.
The cheapest model you can buy is the S90 T5 Momentum. Under the hood is a turbocharged 4-cylinder Drive-E engine producing 250 horsepower for the front wheels to enjoy via a standard 8-speed automatic.
You will need to add more power and spend more money if you want AWD. The S90 T6 AWD Momentum starts at $52,950, adding a supercharger to raise the output to 316 horsepower. In addition to the standard features of the T5, the T6 also includes heated front seats, a large driver information display area and dual integrated tailpipes as standard. Later on, the S90 T8 Twin Engine should also arrive... since it's in some of the press photos.
There's no shortage of German sedans for similar amounts of money. For example, you can have the 528i xDrive from $52,500. Even worse, BMW offers a more frugal diesel engine with plenty of power, the $57,350 535d.
However, there are plenty of things to like about the S90. For starters, it looks modern on the outside, thanks to the Thor's Hammer LED headlights that come standard. Inside, you get that same no-fuss cabin as the XC90 and the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen that controls everything. The S90 is also the first car in the United States to offer Semi-Autonomous driving technology as standard. The updated Pilot Assist system allows the car to speed up, slow down, brake and steer at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.
Large Animal Detection with auto-brake is also available as standard. The system was tested extensively in 2015 and can detect elk or deer, even predicting their behaviors to some degree. The scanner has even been used on kangaroos, but we doubt you'll see any of those in America.
Taking cues from Tesla, the all-new S90 can also be purchased online with the help of a new service called Volvo Concierge. In addition to helping you chose the options, it will notify customers when the car has been shipped from Sweden and when he/she can expect it to arrive. Upon delivery, all of the car’s settings, such as radio stations and software apps, can be pre-configured based on the owner’s preferences.
