Volvo S90 Coupe Still Considered For Production, Might Be Called C90

Three years ago, Volvo revealed a stunning coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was called the Volvo Concept Coupe, and it was the predecessor of the ongoing S90 sedan.

From the moment that exhibit was revealed, the rumors regarding a modern P1800 successor from Volvo have come back to life with something to back them up.

The senior vice president of the Swedish brand’s design department, Thomas Ingenlath, has told journalists at the time that there will be a Coupe in the 90-series, but it will come to market at a later date.

The Volvo 90-series range was planned from the start to have three body styles, and the CrossCountry variants do not count, and neither does the XC90.

With a bit of guesswork, one could estimate that the Swedish brand could launch a large coupe based on the SPA platform of the 90-series in five years time.

The potential Coupe in the Volvo S90 range should be called C90, if we were to use the company’s naming strategy. Its place would be above the C70, which has long been discontinued, and it would help the brand compete with its German and Japanese competitors.

The best part about Volvo’s potential Coupe model is that the company already has a concept that would fit the bill, and it is already a beautiful vehicle. The Concept Coupe from Volvo managed to stir the imagination of many car fans, and the resulting S90 sedan did not disappoint in appearance.

All the automaker has to do is develop a business case for this coupe, which would then allow for the project to receive a green light for production.

It is worth noting that sedans are not that popular as they once were, and three-door hatchback are also experiencing a drop in popularity, but flagship coupe models have remained relevant and desired.

With the latest shift in Volvo production, the Swedish company might have room to build the C90 without too much hassle. All we can hope is that it will look as close to the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe exhibited at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
