They say you can't go wrong with a premium-aspiring sedan in China, but Volvo knows that very well, so the XC90 Excellence luxury SUV had the S60L sedan right by its side at Auto Shanghai 2015.
The Chinese have a...let's call it an affinity for legroom. The more, the better rule applies here, so for those who won't consider buying an SUV, Volvo prepared the S60L T6 Twin Engine with PHEV technology for Shanghai display.
Once you get over the "first Volvo-badged medium-sized premium plug-in hybrid to be manufactured in China" PR description, things look neat and simple. On the outside, eyes meet the second most recognizable design language coming from Sweden - after Ikea, of course. However, the Volvo S60L is all about interior design and comfort.
As you enter the cabin, those 112.5 inches (2.85 m) between the sedan's axles announce their presence by offering plenty of room for those sitting in the back. Although Linear Walnut trimmings and silk metal inserts are not the flashiest and youth-oriented materials, they grant a calm and laid-back air to the S60L's interior.
Quality is the name of the game beneath this Volvo's metal wrapping, starting with the leather covering the seats and ending with plastics.
Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter turbo Drive-E engine sending 238 HP to the front wheels. The rear axle is supplied with torque and horsepower coming from a 50 kW electric motor animated by an 11.2 kWh Li-ion battery. Overall, the S60L T6 Twin Engine offers 306 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) and can go for 53 km (33 miles) in EV mode only.
