Remember when the word "crossover" actually had to be explained at the beginning of every Nissan Qashqai review? Apparently, it was a cross between an SUV and a hatchback.
But who says you can't cross a sedan with an SUV? It's a stupid idea that Volvo tried with the S60 Cross Country. Apparently, the Canadians loved it, so they might do a smaller version.
No seriously, as weird as this S40 rendering looks, it's based on a concept car that's even weirder. About a month ago, the Swedish car company revealed the 40.1 and 40.2, two slightly different takes on what a compact car should be.
We knew Volvo was working on an XC40 model for over a year, since the designers and engineers were never shy about the project. However, the sedan shape of one of the concept surprised everybody.
When asked about a possible return of the S40, Volvo was always uneasy, suggesting the mid-size vehicles like the XC60 will require their full and undivided attention.
The 40.1 concept suggests Volvo wants to look at the Audi A3/Mercedes CLA market in an entirely different way. The S40 successor could be a notchback with a hatch, like the Skoda Octavia. That will make weekend trips to Ikea much easier.
While every German car company is lowering its cars to improve handling, Volvo is thinking of doing the opposite thing. The 40.1 study rode just as high as the supposed XC40 preview car.
Both also opened the doors to new powertrain possibilities, as all future Volvo models will have plug-in hybrid engines.
With his renderings, Remco M tried to add production car values to the 40.2. He used elements from the S90, but kept the blocked off grille and large alloys.
It will be interesting to see much Volvo will try to get away with. Remember, this isn't Tesla, a tech company that can get away with no grilles and drivers that let go of the steering wheel. Considering the S40 is rumored to debut in 2019, we have a long wait ahead of us.
