Volvo's Potentially Life-Saving Pedestrian Airbag

Volvo are well known for their interest in safety (it must be a Swedish thing as Saab were safety-mental as well). Volvo will be introducing, along with their new Golf- and Focus- rivaling V40, an under-bonnet pedestrian airbag.
The idea is that as the unlucky pedestrian wanders in front of the V40, its sophisticated sensor array will anticipate the crash, fractions of a second before it happens, and will deploy the pedestrian airbag which, working in tandem with the pop-up bonnet will further limit the pedestrian’s injuries.

We think the system is great and it should have been fitted to cars long ago, along with the introduction of in-car airbags, this system should have been standard-issue on all cars and thus, out of the thousands of pedestrians which have died over the years, at least some of them would have still been alive - still a result!
