Volvo Reducing Production in Belgium, Cuts 300 Jobs

More bad news follows yesterday’s Ford announcement, as Volvo Car Corporation says it will reduce its production volume in the Ghent factory in Belgium as of 2012.

At first, the production line will be slowed from 59 cars per hour to 54. As a direct result of this measure, 300 jobs will be lost at the factory at the end of this year.

Ghent currently produces the S60, XC60, C30 and V40 model. These will be joined in November by the V40 Cross Country. The factory current employs some 5,200 people.

"We have had a very positive trend during a number of years, with 2011 as a record year. Now we see customer demand declining and we need to rebalance our production output. In today´s market situation, flexibility is essential in the automotive industry," says Lars Wrebo, Senior Vice President Manufacturing at Volvo Car Corporation.

Yesterday, Ford Europe announced it’s closing its factory in Belgium as of 2014, a move which will cost some 6,200 people their jobs.
