Drivers that don’t pay attention to the road usually end up rear ending someone. Over the years car manufactures tried to reduce the number of this kind of accidents by fitting their cars with an “electronic” eye. The system works by identifying the vehicles in front using a laser sensor built into the windscreen or the front bumper and it automatically brakes if the system senses that the driver isn’t paying attention.
Volvo with its City Safety technology helped a chauffeur company reduce its accident rates by 28% in just six months. The winning technology only works at low speeds, when under 19 mph (30 km/h).
The chauffeur company’s CEO considers that if the additional pair of eyes would be mounted also on other cars, it will reduce the rear impact statistics by up to 50 %. The company annually caters to over 100,000 customers. After the Volvo City Safety trial, he company wants also to test out Volvo BLIS - it detects vehicles in the rear blind spot on both sides of the car and it alerts the driver.
