While launching the S60 Polestar high-performance sedan in Australia, Swedish automaker Volvo hinted at future beefed-up models that could rival similar vehicle wearing AMG (Mercedes-Benz), M (BMW) and Nismo (Nissan) badges.
“At the moment it is a pilot program in Australia for Australia. But we only have to look at the other opportunities with the rest of our range to see there is potential,” said Volvo Cars Australia boss, Matt Braid. “Personally, I’d like to say yes [there will be more dedicated Polestar variants], but it is too early to say anything. We will look at what more we can achieve after this pilot program.”
If the S60 Polestar experiment is successful, Volvo will reportedly transfer the same badge and performance upgrades on its V40 and XC60 models.
The Volvo S60 Polestar was launched in Australia as a 50-unit run. The vehicle sports a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine rated at 257 kW (350 HP) that enables it to reach an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. In addition, two race-prepped versions of the S60 Polestar will be entered in the 2014 edition of Australia’s V8 Supercars series.
