Volvo Planning Polestar-Tuned V40 Hot Hatch

If you’re still mourning the loss of the C30 and the souped-up C30 Polestar, then we hopefully have some good news for you. According to Auto Express, Volvo is planning a Polestar-tuned version of the all-new V40 hatchback to go up against sporty hot hatches like the Ford Focus RS, Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG and Audi S3.

Although we've already been able to show you a rendered version of what the Volvo V40 Polestar could look like (shown above), this report seems to have more detailed speculation as to what the Polestar could bring to the stylish V40. The rumored V40 Polestar will be powered by the advanced supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the 2015 XC90. In the V40 Polestar, this 2.0-liter engine would be tuned to produce around 315 hp, which is a considerable incease from the 250-hp C30 Polestar.

While this would be an excellent start, Polestar cars are also known for their improved track performance, so upgraded brakes and suspension would be expected on such a model, too. In the cars of the slightly larger V60 Polester, this includes bigger Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension with adjustable shocks and an under-hood strut tower brace. With this setup, Auto Express guesses that the V40 Polestar would be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds to go with a top speed limited to 155 mph.

Volvo has fitted its Haldex all-wheel-drive system on the V40 for the V40 Cross Country, but there’s no word as to whether the V40 Polestar could benefit from the added performance of all-wheel drive. The previous C30 Polestar was a front-wheel-drive affair, while the all-new V60 Polestar powers all four wheels.

Since there are no sources in this article (named or unnamed), we’re taking this report with a grain of salt, but that doesn’t mean we’re any less excited about the idea of a track-tuned, 315-hp V40 painted up in Rebel Blue. Even if this report is true, however, there is little chance that the V40 Polestar – like the V40 itself – will ever be offered in the U.S.
