Volvo Ocean Race Trophy Unveiled

An extraordinary challenge needs a trophy to match... Volvo, the Swedish carmaker which for quite some time has gotten us used to what they call the Volvo Ocean Race presented today in Alicante, Spain, the new version of the trophy that is given to the winner.

Unknown to many, the Volvo Ocean Race gives no prize in money to the ones who win it, just like in the Olympics, as Volvo likes to say. After racing 37,000 nautical-miles through some of the most challenging seas and oceans of the world, all that awaits for the victor at the finish line is a trophy. Perhaps because of this the trophy is so treasured.

The version of the proof of winning is made of aluminum and silver plate. It features 11 wave-shaped rings, the symbolic representation of the race's editions, each of them engraved with the year of the race, the route and the names of the winning boat and skipper.

The trophy has been designed by Proximma Comunicacion and is 70 cm high and weighs nine kilos. It was created in such a way that after each edition of the race, a new ring will be added to honor the winner of the respective edition.

"We think that the new Volvo Ocean Race Trophy encapsulates all the facets of the Race," said Knut Frostad, CEO Volvo Ocean Race. "It is a distinctive trophy and with its modern feel, it shows how forward thinking the race is. Yet the rings representing the past editions, depict our pride in our legacy and heritage."
