Volvo’s care and constant research in the field of car and traffic safety are already one of the company’s most valuable assets but now cyclists can benefit from that too.
Don’t think that Volvo will be building airbags or electronic safety features for bicycles, because that’s not the case, at least for now. The solution is a much simpler one and comes as a glow-in-the-dark spray called LifePaint.

According to the Swedish car manufacturer, “every year in the U.K., over 19,000 cyclists are involved in accidents” but other European countries have to deal with the same problem, if not even worse. But Volvo are all about problem-solving solutions and their “the best way to survive a crash is not to crash” philosophy says a lot about their interest in road safety.

Coming back to LifePaint, you need to know that it’s a water-based reflective spray, invisible under daylight but shining brightly at night, under the glare of a car’s headlamps, for example. Think of those reflective-fabric vests road workers wear at night and you’ll get the picture.

The life-saving paint can be applied on any parts of a bicycle but it can also be used on clothes, shoes helmets and even dog leashes, children’s backpacks and pushchairs. The paint washes off after approximately one week and Volvo says it will not affect the color or the texture of the material it is applied on.

For now, the product is available in six shops around London and Kent, England but if LifePaint will show promising sales, Volvo will increase distribution. We can only hope this will happen sooner than later and LifePaint becomes a globally embraced solution.
