The Mercedes A-Class is beautifully designed and the BMW 1 Series is beautifully poised, but the Volvo V40 has something about. Maybe you could say it's beautifully Swedish, though that would be unkind to the work of the designers and engineers who made something that works anywhere.
Yes, I know I should be ashamed for secretly being a Volvo fan, but I just can't help it. Today, the Swedes gave me and all the other followers another reason to love their work, as two new engines have been added to the V40 and the V40 Cross County, the softroading version of the car.

Both engines belong to the new Drive-E family, have 2-liter blocks and four cylinders. Starting with the diesel, the twin-turbo united makes a hugely impressive 190 PS and 400
Nm of torque. To put that into perspective, the rival A 220 CDI from Mercedes makes only 170 PS and 350 Nm (because it's a single turbo). Consumption is also amazing: 3.3 l/100km on the V40, equivalent to 85 grams per kilometer, or 4 l/100km and 104 g/km with the CrossCountry model. Again, that's better than a Mercedes, which gets 3.6 l/100km and 109 grams emitted.

“The Volvo V40 D4 offers a massive 80 hp more driving pleasure than other cars in the segment with CO2 emissions at that level. This is yet more proof that the Drive-E powertrains take efficient driving pleasure to a new dimension,” says Michael Fleiss, Vice President Powertrain at Volvo Car Group.

If that's not enough for you, than check out the new T5. Also a Drive-E next-generation engine, it has replaced the old 2.5-liter, producing about the same numbers: 245 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. While output remains largely unchanged, the fuel consumption of 5.8 l/100km (highway) and emissions of 136 grams per kilometer seem difficult to fathom.

These Volvo guys, they know what they're doing now!

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
