Volvo Hybrid Double Deck Bus Unveiled

Swedish manufacturer Volvo unveiled yesterday at the Alexandra Palace in London the first on an entire new range of highly fuel efficient and environmentally friendly Volvo Hybrid Double Deck buses bound for, you guessed it, London.

"We are delighted to formally handover our first six Hybrid Double Deck Buses to Arriva London. The advanced parallel hybrid technology on these vehicles, unique to the Volvo Group, offers significant fuel savings and resultant C02 reductions, as well as significant air quality and noise benefits for other road users,” Stefan Nordstrom, Volvo Buses Europe vice president said at the handover ceremony.

The bus, dubbed Volvo B5L Hybrid is already touring the streets of London, as six of them have been supplied to UK's capital to be used along the Route 141. The new hybrid thus joins eco-friendly buses range, debuted with the the Volvo 7700 Hybrid Single Deck, which was introduced in May in Sweden.

The buses use the parallel hybrid I-SAM technology, developed across the entire Volvo Group. This type of hybrid bus is powered by a combination of an electric motor and a diesel engine and it can be powered by either source independently, or in combination drawing on both power sources at the same time.

So far, being new, no official fuel consumption figures are available. Yet, according to test tack development and in service field trials with Arriva London, Volvo says it has noticed "significant savings in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (C02) emissions as well as reduction in Nitrous Oxides and particulates."
