Volvo Future Plans Revealed

Volvo is planning to reshape its future model line-up as part of the rebirth process the company is going through. This means that some of the models will be discontinued as the range changes its structure.

According to autos.msn.com, the vehicles that will be axed are the S40 sedan (in the next two years), the V50 station wagon (within two years of the S40’s phasing out) and the V70 station wagon (2011 to be the last model year). The first will be dropped as it is seen as a potential threat for the refreshed S60 sedan.

Volvo is currently considering releasing a smaller sedan as well as a compact crossover. The latter will be created as a competitor for the BMW X1 in the premium segment. The vehicle will also be aimed at attracting customers who were planning to buy the discontinued station wagons.

The automotive producer is also willing to refresh the large vehicles in its line-up. This means that the S80 sedan and the XC90 crossover will get new incarnations in the next two years.

"We need to do something about each of those new products," Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source. "The large S80 sedan segment is very big in China, and that range of sedan is even more critical for all the luxury brands than it has been five years ago."

Volvo also sees a change at the core of its line-up. While the company used three separate platforms under the former Ford ownership, the new (Geely) era might see it rely on two platforms, a large one and a mid-sized one.
