Volvo is probably getting a bit tired of being known as a carmaker that only makes safe automobiles. But even so, this image is what’s keeping them afloat.
But the Swedish automaker has been fined by US regulators the sum of $1.5 million (€1.2 million) for not reporting safety issues with its cars sold in North America in time.
"With millions of vehicles traveling our highways every single day, we take our responsibility to safeguard the driving public very seriously and we expect automakers to do the same,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Manufacturers are required to handle any safety issues both quickly and appropriatel.”
Volvo has agreed to pay the fine and will make internal changes to respond to recalls and make safety-related decisions much faster. The NHTSA found that Volvo failed to report safety defects within five business days on seven occasions.
