Volvo City Safety Awarded by Euro NCAP

It seems that Volvo is on its way to leaving the recent safety demonstration fail behind, as the company’s City Safety active braking system has received an Euro NCAP Advance rating, an assessment rating for new and exceptional safety technology, which was awarded at the Paris Auto Show.

"Highly gratifying. We have worked long and hard for active safety systems to be included in Euro NCAP's assessment criteria," says Thomas Broberg, senior safety adviser at Volvo Cars. "Euro NCAP Advance is without doubt a step in the right direction and an excellent complement to the physical crash tests,"

Volvo has previously lobbied for Euro NCAP to include active safety systems in its overall assessment of car models.

The Volvo City Safety was introduced in 2008 as a standard feature on the XC60 model. At speeds below 18.6 mph (30 km/h), the system automatically brakes the car if the driver fails to react when the car in front suddenly decelerates or comes to a halt.

According to Volvo low-speed rear-end impacts account for over 50 percent of all collisions. When the speeds do not exceed 9.3 mph (15 km/h), the system can entirely avoid an accident and between 9.3 and 18.6 mph (15 and 30 km/h) it significantly reduces the consequences of an impact.

“At the Paris Motor Show on October 1, the Euro NCAP Advance rating was awarded for the very first time. This is a complement to Euro NCAP's current assessment system in which car models are tested in a variety of situations and then rated for safety with up to five stars,” stated the press release.
