Every time we test a Volvo, we leave with an impression of “Boy, that’s a good car/SUV. Too bad the engines are so old!”. The news we were hoping for came today, as two brand new engines have been detailed, the D4 and T6 units, belonging to the new Drive-E family.
The new D4 is once again a 2-liter turbodiesel, but they say the engine is all-new. It is already available for order with the new S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80. Power rating is an impressive 181 hp, but more importantly has much lower CO2 emissions, below the 100 g/km threshold.
“The Drive-E diesels feature world-first i-ART technology with pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail. Each injector has an intelligent chip on top of it that monitors injection pressure. Using this information, the self-adapting i-ART system makes sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle,” Volvo explains.
But the one that really get our blood boiling is the new T6., which will be available in 2014. It’s no longer a six-cylinder engine, it’s a four-cylinder. Yet it delivers an impressive 306 from just 2 liters of displacement.
The reason for this is that it’s a twin-charged engine, with both a supercharger and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end torque gives the petrol engine a naturally aspirated feel, while the turbo give it more power at the top end.
“We have created a range of smaller, more intelligent engines with power curves that give exciting driveability compared with engines with more cylinders. At the same time we continue to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions,” says Derek Crabb.
