Everyone already knows that launching the driverless car is now just a matter of time. Volvo and Ericsson are currently working on an innovative media streaming system that will allow you to watch your favorite show, for example, while your car drives you to work.
The announcement has been made at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Volvo has revealed that, together with its technology partner Ericsson, it is developing high bandwidth streaming capabilities that will take commuting to another level. Utilizing the latter’s network and cloud experience, and predicting the route or the network conditions, Volvo plans to deliver high-quality, non-interrupted streaming in its cars while on the move.

By learning things like conventional routes, times of travel or media preferences, future Volvo driverless cars will give their customers the opportunity to choose paths and select content depending on the duration of their commute.

Anders Tylman, General Manager Volvo Monitoring & Concept Center at Volvo Car Group, has stated that its company and Ericsson are “actively working on future solutions to deliver the best user experience in fully autonomous mode,” and with this new way of traveling, “it is no longer a question of getting from A to B quickly but it’s about the experience you wish to have in the car.

According to Claes Herlitz, Head of Automotive Services at Ericsson, “Almost 70 percent of all mobile data traffic will be from video in the coming years” and “this requires an innovative connectivity, cloud, and analytics solution that is not only capable of serving multiple vehicles but also has the capacity to provide the high-quality, uninterrupted video service today’s consumer is accustomed to.

Volvo has been a big name in the automotive world since 1927, when it was founded. It was part of the Swedish Volvo Group until 1999 when the company was bought by Ford Motor Company, and starting with 2010, Volvo Cars has been under the ownership of the Zhejiang Geely Holding of China.
