Perhaps years from now, history books will mark this day as the beginning of the end for the over a century old internal combustion engine. Today, American manufacturer GM begun mass production of the Chevrolet Volt, whose entrance onto the market marks the beginning of the first true competition in the EV market sector, a war which GM will be waging against the Nissan Leaf.
The first production Volt to be rolled off the assembly lines of the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be up for grabs for those in need for a piece of history. GM will auction the model during an event at the manufacturing plant, with the proceeds to be donated to the Detroit Public Schools.
“Every aspect of the Volt – from its aerodynamic shape to its battery chemistry – is a testament to the importance of math and sciences,” said GM North America president Mark Reuss. “By encouraging Detroit-area students to pursue these topics, we hope to cultivate the next generation of engineers who will build upon the Volt’s innovative technologies.”
The first Volt is painted in the first color the model was presented in, Viridian Joule, and comes with Light Neutral interior with dark accents, Premium Trim Package, Rear Camera and Park Assist Package, and polished wheels. GM will open the bid for the model at $50,000.
The Volt will be priced at $41,000 and will offer its customers 25 to 50 miles of all-electric driving before the gas engine starts producing electricity. After that, the range is extended by 344 miles.
