Volkswagen’s Latest Gesture Control Technology to Hit Mass Production After CES 2016

Volkswagen returned to this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas more determined than ever, and besides the BUDD-e concept vehicle, the German carmaker also presented the e-Golf Touch. With its new infotainment system with gesture control, the concept shows that technologies from last year’s CES weren’t just some beautiful dreams and are now close to production.

The Golf R Touch, revealed last year at CES, was the first Volkswagen to feature a gesture control system, and now, with the introduction of the e-Golf Touch, the Wolfsburg-based company presents its latest generation of the Modular Infotainment Toolkit (MIB), with a 9.2-inch HD display.

At first glance, you can see four touch-sensitive buttons used to access options like Menu, Car, Home or App, and a push-rotary switch. The system’s 8.2-inch wide and 4.1-inch high screen consists of a large main area and two configurable tiles on the right of the home screen, which can be assigned to ten different functions, including Media and phone.

Together with the e-Golf Touch, Volkswagen launches its latest voice control technology that offers improved controls with voice commands now being displayed on the screen. The new version of the voice control system will be launched in early summer 2016 in Europe.

If you're a Siri fan, you’ll love the new “Keyword Activation” feature that allows the driver to start voice recognition only by saying “Hello Volkswagen.” If you run out of battery on your phone, don’t worry, because the e-Golf Touch has a wireless charging system that can fill the battery on your phone via the rear armrests.

Among the other electronic innovations that the German carmaker intends to mass produce in the near future are the Electronic Voice Amplification, which improves the car acoustics so you won’t have to speak louder for the back-seat passengers to understand you, the Personalization 2.0 that allows individual settings to be saved in a user account, then saved to the cloud, and many other systems that will turn your car into a bigger, four-wheeled smartphone.
