In America, Volkswagen is known only for boring looking sedans, which haven't been selling very well. However, the German automaker is a leader in new technology and innovation and this can clearly be seen in the XL1. No longer a concept, the hypermileing machine has been ten years in the making.
To show what it can really do when it sets its mind to it, the Volkswagen XL1 was actually brought to America, not to show off at an event, but to drive down the crowded streets of Manhattan.

The futuristic shape left many people wondering what it was, and a thread started on Reddit has even been opened. When it suddenly appeared among the cabs of New York, people just didn't know what to make of it. Some though it was a simple case of tuning, others confused it for the GM EV1 or McLaren's X1.

An official statement about the XL1's visit to New York is available below!

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
