Unveiled during this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the super efficient Volkswagen XL1 will hit the market with a range of 261 miles per gallon and a price tag of around $100,000.
Scheduled to be built in only 250 examples, and probably not available on the US market, the German plug-in diesel hybrid is rumored to reach its customers through a lease program only. “It will most likely be a lease scheme,” Volkswagen of America’s manager of product and technology communications, Mark Gillies, told Autoblog.

As a reminder, the XL1 takes its power from a 47 HP two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine combined with an electric motor producing 27 HP thanks to a 5.5 kWh battery pack. The vehicle has a drag coefficient of 0.189 and a total weight of only 1,752 lbs (795 kg).

The XL1 can hit an electronically limited top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h), while the 0-62 time is rated at 12.7 seconds. The hybrid can travel 31 miles (50 km) on electricity alone, but the range can get up to 310 miles (499 km) with a full tank of gas.
