For the past couple of years, we've had that strange feeling that we're living "the beginning of the future". We have the first robots, the first cars that drive themselves or run purely on electricity. How futuristic! And to top it all off, our mobile devices are far cooler than anything Star Trek communicator from 60s television.
Volkswagen also caught on to idea and has just released a few commercials where the legendary actors who played Captain Kirk and Mister Spock in the original series drive their XL1 and e-Golf cars.
We've received these videos from Volkswagen's German Youtube channel, as you can tell from their titles. They clips are dubbed over and appear to have been designed this way from the very beginning (check out Spock's one-liner). But who knows, maybe VW USA will get their own versions once the e-Golf reaches dealerships.
Why the XL1 and e-Golf?
The first car is currently the most fuel efficient production automobile on the planet. Using a combination of electric motors and a small two-cylinder diesel engine, it's able to travel 100 kilometers on a single liter of fuel. That's well over 200 mpg according to US standards, a figure made possible by extensive use of carbon fiber and radical streamlining.
Just to give you guys an example, the XL1 has no door mirrors, which have been replaced by external cameras and monitors mounted on the inside of the doors. Sensors are picking alien activity in the engine bay captain!
