Volkswagen recently confirmed production of the electric bus, but it has extensive plans for the platform that underpins it. There's a crossover on the way, as well as the I.D. hatchback. And now it seems the Scirocco will be reborn as an electric enthusiast's car.
According to a report from Auto Express magazine, an all-new Scirocco is under consideration. It will be a two-door coupe again, but only electric powertrains will be available.

As long as Volkswagen brings sexy back, we're happy with not having a TSI or TDI. But there's an older story that says the Beetle coupe would go electric. Two canceled cars being reborn as two electric vehicles? Seems a little unlikely to us.

But it's not one of those unfounded stories to promote a rendering. No, Volkswagen's head of development Dr. Frank Welsch had this to say about the electric sportscar:

“For me, we can only use [Scirocco] for a sporty two-door coupe. We are not clear on how we will do such a car, and are thinking whether we do an interesting concept based on our electric platform; this could be a great and fun car. We are thinking about options for a new small coupe. We are working on a concept for emotional cars. Volkswagen always has an offer for emotional cars."

So, it might be a personal pet project, which is good, considering most of the best cars out there start out this way.

But if we had to pick between the sporty-looking Scirocco and the cutesy Beetle... yeah, screw the Bug and its heritage.

Volkswagen apparently needs the Scirocco EV to add some emotion to its electric car range. Besides the 300 horsepower twin-engined version, there would also be a regular one with 170 ponies. Also subject to variation is the size of the battery, as this will offer anything from 200 to 375 miles per charge (322 and 604 kilometers).
