Volkswagen US Sedan First Sketch Released

Following the intense reports and speculation surfacing these past weeks on what would be the sedan considered by German carmaker Volkswagen for the US, the company's US division released today a sketch of the car, expected to go on sale State side in late 2011.

Not much about the future car is yet known, or what the nameplate to be used for it will be. What is known is that VW's sedan will be built at the Chattanooga facility, starting early 2011. Volkswagen plans to build at least 100,000 units every year, while prices will be set at around $20,000. It will be intended primarily for the US market, but other countries may get it as well, Autonews reported.

The confirmed sedan will be only the beginning of the Volkswagen sedan assault on the US. The German carmaker has confirmed it plans to return the Phaeton badge to the US.

"I have to admit that it was a mistake to take this car out of the market," Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America said in mid-September, at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Automotive News reported. "We think that the Volkswagen brand is a good place for this. We are looking at various alternatives for the re-launch of Phaeton."

The Phaeton will be the top of the range for Volkswagen's sedan, with the one previewed here likely to become the entry-level.

"Above the midsize new sedan, we'll have another product, like the Avalon for Toyota. That's our strategy, to have a lineup ending with the Phaeton. We will bring the Phaeton back to the market," Jacoby added.
