Volkswagen Unveils New GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo for GT6

In the old days, Volkswagen fans used to gather in the Ikea car park at night to show off the Passat wheels they had installed on their old Polo. However, since most of them now reside online, Volkswagen has decided to give them something that will keep them busy. Say hello to the GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo, a virtual mix between the hot hatch and the supercar that is already available for download in Gran Turismo 6.

As a design exercise, the GTI Supersport is like a cross between track racing and Pikes Peak. Its standout feature is a gigantic rear wing that mounts on large struts. Everywhere you look, the car is wider and more aggressive while still familiar to any Golf 7 owner.

This is the second such concept they've given us after the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo unveiled last year. The roof might be different, but the powertrain is the same. Old meets new under the bonnet, as the legendary VR6 architecture has been matched to the TSI turbo expertise.

The result is a 6-cylinder with 503 PS and 665 Nm (491 lb-ft), which is comparable to an Audi S8. Just like the GTI Roadster, power is delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system, neither of which is available on any production GTI at the moment.

0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is 300 km/h (186 mph). With such high numbers, it's no wonder Volkswagen are comparing things to a supercar. The chances of this, or any other Vision Gran Turismo concept reaching production are small. But we've caught wind that some of the design features on the GTI Supersport are going to find their way to a production car.

We are, of course, talking about the more hardcore GTI that the Germans were testing at the Nurburgring last year. Since it needs to be faster than the current Performance Pack models, we expect the 265 PS engine from the SEAT Leon Cupra might be used. With track-focused suspension and an upgraded aural experience, it could be the most extreme car ever to dawn the letters G, T and I.

Look for more Golf GTI news around the Wörthersee GTI Treffen in May.
