Volkswagen Unveils New Caddy BiFuel

Volkswagen' Caddy van model has now received a Autogas-powered engine (LPG). The alternative fuel emits less CO2 by over ten percent, but the biggest change is that running cost will be substantially reduced.

On the European market, a liter of liquid natural gas, which enjoys tax incentives until 2018, is about 80 euro cents. This means that the Caddy only needs €8.24 of fuel to travel 100 km – a strong argument for this type of drive.

The Caddy has now been fitted with BiFuel’s bivalent drive – which can easily be switched for petrol use – reduces fuel consumption and emissions. It’s powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 102 hp, which offers a combined fuel consumption in the case of the panel van version of 10.3 liters of Autogas per 100 kilometers, which is equivalent to 167 g/km CO2. When running on petrol alone, the Caddy need 8 liters of it (equivalent to 187 g/km CO2) to cover the same distance – still very fuel efficient.

BiFuel models come fitted with an additional 45 liter fuel tank stored under the vehicle floor in such a way that it does not compromise bootspace functionality. Together with the 60 liter fuel tank, this is enough for a combined range of over 940 kilometers, while the gas alone is enough to cover 460 km.

Compared to aftermarket Autogas systems, the factory-installed solution offers distinct advantages: the vehicle has been subjected to extensive durability tests, and it has been crash-tested with its fuel tank and is therefore much safer. It’s also fully covered by warranty, including all gas components. The new Caddy BiFuel ordering begins very soon, according to the German carmaker.
