Unveiled only recently at the IAA in Hannover, the Volkswagen Tristar is a concept that showcases the best features of the outgoing T model series while providing a sneak peek at what's Volkswagen plans to do with its future range of vans and pickups.
Don't be fooled by its concept label. The VW Tristar is actually underpinned by bits and bobs you normally find on the German manufacturer's current range of workhorses. Built in time to celebrate 30 years since Volkswagen introduced the Syncro, which is the best and most versatile version of the iconic T2 van, the Tristar is a short-wheelbase T5 Transporter with its roof partially hacked to make room for a bed.

VW fitted a 2-liter TDI turbo diesel with 204 PS and a hefty 450 Nm (331 lb-ft) on tap to ensure this concept is able to make the best out of the 4Motion all-wheel drive system it's also equipped with. Furthermore, its transmission is a seven-speed DSG, also borrowed from the carmaker's parts bin.

Look beyond the Rocadura 17-inch alloy wheels, the chunky tires and the curiously designed pickup bed and you're left with a glimpse into the future. What future? Well, the T6-gen Volkswagen van, that is. The T5 is 11 years old, so a new model is long due.

Voices in the industry hint that the T6 van is going to be officially unveiled next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Furthermore, VW officially hinted the heavily-anticipated T6 Transporter will come in the "foreseeable future."
