Did you guys ever make a list of cars that you are ashamed to admit you like/liked? I did, and it includes the Hyundai Tiburon, the Hummer, and Pontiac Solstice. I know I should forget those cars ever existed, but I can, just like I can't forget the fact that some companies tried making fast MPVs/minivans.
One example of this would be the Opel Zafira OPC or VXR. To make it Opel took a boring box on wheels, dressed it like a race car and fitted the 2-liter turbo they had made for the Astra. Ford also stuffed the S-Max with the lovely 2.5-liter turbo from the Focus ST.
All these cars make you feel weird on the inside. Is it OK to sell the Golf GTI, start a large family and buy a fast wagon instead? Unfortunately, Volkswagen doesn't make a fast MPV (though the new Golf R Variant comes close to that description).
But what if we took one of those nice EA888 turbos they make and installed it in the 2016 Touran. That car is one of the most technologically advanced on the market, and it should be able to handle 300 horsepower with the help of AWD.
We might eventually see the Touran becoming available with a 220 horsepower turbo engine, just like the one in the Golf GTI. Alas, one hot engine does not a whole hot car make. That's what we learned when we tested 230 horsepower versions of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. You need the right setup for the suspension, brakes and steering to have fun.
But we can at least dream of a Touran GTI, thanks to this rendering from X-Tomi Design. His plastic surgery has turned the Touran from soccer mom to racing mom, and we love it. Bigger wheels are included, as are a set of red stripes on the front.
There's no rendering of the back, but we can imagine that two pipes spew out hot gasses and popping sounds. Could you imagine taking your mother-in-law to the airport in one of these?
