Volkswagen just launched a new model called the Cross Touran L in China this week. As the name suggests, it's got a longer wheelbase and more rugged body kit than its European counterpart.
The Touran is the only MPV based on the MQB platform since neither Skoda nor SEAT developed one. However, we're still shocked to see the Cross version coming from China.
Off-road MPVs used to be a thing back in the day. If you live in France, you might still see the Renault Scenic RX4, which shockingly has more ground clearance than almost all SUVs. There was also an unpopular Cross Touran back in 2011 model and the SEAT Altea Freetrack, which went up to the Golf GTI and GTD 2-liter engines. Downright crazy!
The Cross Touran L picks up right where they left off, but it will not be sold in Europe. It features a similar body kit to the Passat Alltrack, featuring black plastic bumper cladding and wheel arches, coupled with silver underbody trim for a false sense of security. The suspension is lifted by a couple centimeters as well.
The roof rails also increase the Touran's rugged appeal. And while it's undeniably dorky when compared to the Tiguan, thanks to the sloped hood, we still love it.
The Chinese-spec car is locally made by the Shanghai-Volkswagen joint venture. We're told that the body hasn't been extended, even though they added the L at the end of the name.
Two engines will be available, neither of which is a diesel. For 155,900 yuan, the Cross Touran offers a 150 HP 1.4-liter turbo, while 230,800 gets you the 1.8 TSI with 180 horsepower. In both cases, power is sent to the front wheels via a DSG gearbox. The Cross Touran L stands out thanks to a black interior with 8-inch infotainment, orange paint and a large panoramic sunroof.
