We would have liked a detailed report from the carmaker regarding this very important announcement. Nevertheless, Bernd Osterloh, the automaker’s top labor representative, said late last week that the VW Passenger Cars brand identified several versions that would be cut to save 1.9 billion euros or about 2 billion dollars.
"We from the works council have long flagged the huge range of model variants and different components," said Osterloh. "That brings enormous complexity and adds to costs, for example, for logistics. We can take out costs there on a large scale and don't have to talk about job cuts."

Yes, cutting trim levels is much better than firing people. Of course, the company would not have been spurred to action were it not for the huge estimated cost of the TDI emissions scandal. The entire group has previously stated €1 billion will be cut from its investments for 2016.

But that's still only a drop in the ocean, considering many believe that the cost of the recall could reach into the high tens of billions. But let's not concern ourselves with the possibility of job cuts and use our wits to point out what trim levels VW needs to cut.

The biggest offender is the Beetle, partly because it's not selling that well. Besides the multitude of special editions such as the Fender one, they sell the Beetle "Exclusive" and "CLUB." Three standard trim levels are offered, and you need to multiply everything by two to account for the convertible.

We can probably all agree the Jetta Hybrid is worthless, as are the 13 versions of the Up! city car we are showing you in the photo above. And while we're at it, let's mention that the Tiguan model range makes no sense. "Lounge" Sport & Style or Trend & Fun - what the heck, just give us an SUV already!
