Volkswagen to Launch Golf Cabrio in 2011

The Volkswagen brand doesn’t quite pack a serious punch in terms of convertibles right now. If you’re in the market for a new topless vehicle wearing the VW badge, you only have one choice: the Eos. OK, the car has recently received a facelift, but this doesn’t make it enough.

However, things are about to change: the Eos will go bye-bye in 2014 being replaced by a Passat convertible, as we previously reported. But this upmarket move would leave the compact convertible segment uncovered, so the German company decided that it will also bring back the Golf Cabrio, a vehicle that has been offered for every generation of the Golf, excepting the fifth and the sixth (the current one).

The company recently issued a press release, stating that it will add 1,800 jobs at its Osnabruck plant in Germany (we must thank VW Vortex for the scoop), with the main reason behind this being to prepare the production of the Golf Cabrio.

The topless incarnation of the Golf VI will start rolling off the assembly lines in spring next year. We’re looking forward to meeting the vehicle in person...

"Many people dreamt of the Beetle Cabrio, the Karmann Ghia or the Scirocco. It is wonderful to see this tradition being continued now and to know that automobile production in Osnabruck has a future. The new Golf Cabrio will be a great car. The extensive expertise in cabriolet construction that is available here is being harnessed," said Lower Saxony's Minister President David McAllister.
