Volkswagen to Bring NILS Concept to Frankfurt

One of the most interesting concepts that we'll meet at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show is the Volkswagen NILS, a development that aims to offer us a hint on how future cars could look like.

Before we start giving you details, we have to explain that the NILS was developed as part of VW's Group Research and might be related with Audi's Frankfurt-debuting Urban Concept.

The NILS in a vehicle for individual transportation, using an F1-style layout and literally placing the driver in the middle of the 3040mm long, 1390mm wide and 1200mm high action. As you might have noticed, the dimensions make it seriously smaller than the most compact VW vehicle, the Up. It rides on 17-inch alloy rims, which uses 115/80 tires at the front and 125.80 tires at the rear.

At the rear, we find a compact electric motor that has a nominal power of 15 kW (20.4 hp) and a peak power of 25 kW (34 hp) and a torque of 96 lb-ft. The juice comes from a 5.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack (VW describes this as being "relatively inexpensive"), which offers a driving range of 40 miles (64 km).

The 460 kg NILS can hit 62 mph in under 11 seconds (we know, pretty disappointing) and offers a top speed of 81 mph (130 km/h) and needs two hours to reach a full charge.

VW promises that the NILS offers sports car handling. What's behind that claim? Well, for starters there's no power steering (the light weight of the vehicle allowed it to be eliminated) and we have a double-wishbone setup for both axles.
