As you may remember, Volkswagen made a huge push into plug-in cars a few years. The technology was presented as sporty, introduced to the Golf GTE, followed by the Passat GTE and a Tiguan concept back in 2015.
However, the Tiguan GTE concept never reached production, as Volkswagen is still struggling to put some of its engines back into production and meeting the latest emissions targets. However, a Tiguan L PHEV model was presented last fall in China and is now on sale.

No, it's not called a GTE, but it looks like one, with the front grille sporting a blue badge and revised air intakes that are reminiscent of the Golf GTI. According to Volkswagen, the Tiguan L plug-in hybrid version uses leading hybrid technology, combining high performance with low fuel consumption.

This is a strictly local model, even though the prototype for this car was spotted undergoing winter testing in Scandinavia. Wearing the L badge means the body of this vehicle is the same as that of the Tiguan Allspace in Europe. Its sister cars, the Skoda Kodiaq, and SEAT Tarraco are also supposed to go hybrid soon.

The Tiguan L PHEV model measures 4,712mm in length, 1,839mm in width and 1,673mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,791mm, keeping the same as the normal model. According to the info we found on local websites, the EA211 1.4-liter turbo engine resides under the hood. On its own, this produces exactly 150 HP (110 kW) and 250 Nm of torque. The powertrain also contains n 85 kW electric motor, sitting somewhere between the TSI engine and the DQ400e 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Total system output is rated at 155 kW (210 HP) and 400 Nm. Other useful figures include an 8.1 seconds time from 0 to 100 km/h, a top speed of 200 km/h (limited), the combined fuel consumption of 1.9 l/100km and 52km pure electric range.
