Volkswagen is currently on a quest to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050, a program the Germans have given the somewhat uninspired name of "Way to Zero".
Obviously, as far as the vehicles themselves are concerned, the focus is on all-electric models, with the ID.3 and, more recently, the ID.4 featuring in most of the headlines. The former has been a remarkable success so far, confirming once again the Europeans' love for hatchbacks in general and those made by Volkswagen in particular, while the ID.4 is eagerly expected in the U.S. as an alternative to the Tesla Model Y and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Well, Volkswagen would like to remind us that hybrids can be pretty beneficial to the environment, especially if they're of the PHEV variety. That stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle and, as the name suggests, use both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor powered by a battery that can be charged from an exterior source, unlike in a plain simple hybrid.

The latest Volkswagen model to use this technology is the Tiguan eHybrid, available now to order for a starting price - in Germany - of €42,413.11 ($51,523.45, if we're to maintain the German accuracy of the original price). In exchange for that significant sum of money, the customer will get what appears to be a regular Tiguan, but it's actually one that hides a lithium-ion battery in the vehicle's floor, just in front of the rear axle.

Volkswagen doesn't disclose the capacity of the battery, and since we don't know the Tiguan eHybrid's consumption in EV mode either, we can't use the 30 miles (50 km) maximum zero-emissions range to deduce it. Still, the WLTP-rated range should be enough to enable most owners to use the Tiguan eHybrid as an electric vehicle in most situations. Besides, we're most likely looking at the same 13 kWh unit as in the Golf GTE.

The eHybrid can only be charged by AC at a rate of 2.3 kW using a domestic outlet or 3.6 kW when using a public or home charging station. It may sound underwhelming, but considering we're looking at a fairly small battery, it should definitely be enough for a complete charge overnight or while at work.

The powertrain is taken right out of the Golf GTE, which means the Tiguan eHybrid comes with a 1.4 TSI engine developing 150 PS (148 hp) and an electric motor good for 110 PS (108.5 hp). Combined, the two generate 245 PS (180 kW/241.5 hp) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.

The PHEV Tiguan comes with a steep price, but it's also packed full of technology and features. It has three different trim levels - Life, Elegance, and R-Line - but even the base one offers a digital cockpit, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, three-zone automatic air conditioning, six-speed dual-clutch transmission, LED headlights, and Lane Assist, among others.

Orders are open for the Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid, but for any inquiries related to delivery dates, you'll have to ask the dealership.
